The First Days :

First Years are usually brought in ahead of other students and given a tour of the school. They spend about 4 hours with their class Form Teacher before they start formal classes. They also meet their class Senior Prefect on the first day and the trained counsellor, Ms Mooney, who has special responsibility for First Years. Ms Mooney meets the girls in small groups throughout the year and is available daily to sort out any problems that may arise in the transition from primary to secondary school. Once classes are up and running the senior prefects assign a Sixth Year student to each First Year. This “buddy” system plays an important part in helping the younger students settle into their new school. This link is symbolised by a “friendship” bracelet or other gift which is given by the Sixth year student to her “buddy”.

Special activities are arranged among First Years to help them get to know new friends. One year, for example, the First Years came in on a Saturday and painted their own classrooms. This year a full day of Basketball and Hockey was organised specially for First Years. It was an enjoyable, noisy and very productive day!

Just before Halloween a First Year/Sixth Year fancy dress party is held. Another very enjoyable and noisy evening!

In December each year an evening for First Year parents is held. Parents get the opportunity to meet the parents of their daughter’s friends as well as sampling culinary delights prepared by the First Years. Parents are also brought on a “guided” tour of school by their daughter.
